If youve been driving for a while, you have probably heard about the 3 month or 5000km rule. No matter what you have always just got your oil changed every 5000km, or panicked if it has gone over that. This may have been true for vehicles years ago, but technology has come a long way in our engines and the oil we use. Todays engines are a lot more efficient at using the oil and monitoring it. For most new vehicles, you can travel up to 24,000km** on one oil change! There are many factors that affect how long your oil will last though. Things like hard acceleration, high rpms, towing heavy loads, idling, and weather can all affect the lifespan of your oil. Always refer to your owners manual to see what the automaker recommends as the proper service intervals for your car. So if you own a new vehicle, you may not need to follow the 5000 rule anymore. That could end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.
**Note: This is not for every vehicle! Always read and follow your specific owners manual for proper servicing of your vehicle!**
